During the 30's and 40's, Hollywood produced a genre of madcap comedies that emphasized reuniting the central couple after divorce or separation. And the female protagonists were strong, independent, and sophisticated. Here, Stanley Cavell examines seven of those classic movies for their cinematic techniques, and for such varies themes as feminism, liberty and interdependence. Included are Adam's Rib, Bringing Up Baby, and The Philadelphia Story.

2010 Reprint of 1916 Edition. This book was initially published in 1853 as a pamphlet, then greatly revised and expanded and released as a book in 1858 (THE TWO BABYLONS: or The Papal Worship Proved to be The Worship of Nimrod and his Wife). He claimed the Roman Catholic Church was a Babylonian mystery cult, and pagan, whereas Protestants worshipped the true Jesus and the true God. He contended that Roman Catholic religious practices are actually pagan practices grafted onto true Christianity during the reign of Constantine. This edition reprints the book edition, not the shorter pamphlet. Down in the dell, behind a curtain of foxgloves, lives a family of crafty weasels.
